Tax Rates for the Town of Denton

Ordinance #734, an Ordinance to appropriate funds and estimate income in accordance with the budget adopted for fiscal year beginning July 1, 2022 and ending June 30, 2023 set forth the following tax rates.

Rate of Taxation on Real Property

The rate of taxation on real property to be taxed within the boundaries of the Town of Denton, Maryland is hereby established as Seventy-four Cents ($.74) on each one hundred ($100.00) of value for the fiscal year beginning July 1 of each year.

Rate of Taxation on Business Personal Property

The rate of taxation on any personal property to be taxed by the Town of Denton is hereby established as One Dollar and Fifty Cents ($1.50) on each one hundred dollars ($100.00) of assessed valuation.

Rate of Taxation on Railroad and Utility Property

The rate of taxation on any railroad and utility property to be taxed by the Town of Denton is established as One Dollar and Seventy Cents ($1.70) on each one hundred dollars ($100.00) of assessed valuation.

Service and Administration Fee collected by Caroline County Tax Office

That the rate of service and administrative fees on semi-annual billings assessed by the Caroline County Tax Office shall be and hereby is established as .110% Service and Admin Fee for 2022-2023. This is computed at .4% annual interest divided by twelve month times three months, October, November & December times 1.1%.

Homeowners or Renters Property Tax Credit

The Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation urge Marylander's to consider whether they may be eligible to receive a homeowners’ or renters’ property tax credit. The deadline to file for both tax credits is October 1, 2023. The Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation is pleased to offer these tax relief programs to assist Marylander's who pay high property taxes or rent relative to their income.

Determining eligibility and filing online is fast and east thanks to the online tax credit application system. The Homeowners Tax Credit sets a limit on the amount of property taxes owed based on income.  If a resident has already paid their property taxes and applies by October 1, any tax credit that they may be eligible will be credited by their county tax office.

The Renters Tax Credit provides tax relief for eligible renters who pay high monthly rent relative to their total income and do not receive federal or state housing subsidies or reside in public housing. The credit is issued in the form of a direct check and limited to $1000 a year.

Per the State of MD Annual Tax Credit Awareness Campaign released on August 22, 2023:  In 2022 more than  37,000 homeowners received an average of $1,501 in tax relief and 6,004 renters received an average of $450 in tax relief.

All real property taxes are billed annually and collected by the Caroline County Treasurer’s Office.
