Denton Town Office Building

The Town is governed by a diverse array of Boards and Commissions, each of which offers valuable counsel.

Planning Commission:

The Planning Commission shall consist of five members, and is responsible for reviewing, evaluating, and approving or disapproving plans for subdivisions and mobile home subdivisions. Additionally, it reviews and makes recommendations to the Town Council regarding proposed changes or amendments to the Denton Comprehensive Plan, proposed text amendments to the Zoning Ordinance, proposed rezoning, proposed changes or amendments to land subdivisions, proposed acquisitions and developments of lands for Town open space or recreation purposes, and proposed changes in land use or development arising from local, state, or federal programs or policies. The Commission convenes on the last Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Denton Town Office building.

Board of Appeals:

The Board of Appeals shall consist of three members, the Board reviews and resolves appeals alleging errors in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by the Zoning Administrator. It also considers special exceptions and authorizes variances that do not conflict with the public interest. In cases where special circumstances necessitate the enforcement of provisions of this chapter resulting in undue hardship, injustice, but that most closely aligns with the Chapter’s purpose and intent, the Board of Appeals makes determinations. Additionally, it resolves classifications of district of use for any unspecified use, provided that the use conforms to the specific regulations within the designated district. This Board convenes on an as-needed basis on the second Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Denton Town Office building.

Historic and Architectural Review Commission:

The Historic and Architectural Review Commission shall consist of five members, each of whom shall be qualified by specialized interest, knowledge, or training in relevant fields such as history, architecture, archaeology, preservation, or urban design. Two of the five members shall possess professional qualifications, which shall be determined in accordance with the guidelines outlined in “Procedures for State Certification of Local Government Historic Preservation Programs,” established by the Maryland Historical Trust in February 1985. All members shall be residents of the Town. This Board convenes on an as-needed basis on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Denton Town Office building.

These bodies are composed of resident volunteers who play a pivotal role in shaping the town’s future.

Planning and Zoning Commission

Volunteering on the Planning and Zoning Commission necessitates applicants’ acquisition of knowledge regarding state and local land use laws and regulations. Before formal consideration for appointment, applicants will be mandated to complete education courses administered by the Maryland Department of Planning.
